Hope Fading Quickly After Early Defeats Premium Content

WINSTON-SALEM — Even at Wake Forest, never a football power, hope usually manages to hang around for a few games.

Before this season, only once since 1996 had Wake not won at least one of its first two games, keeping dreams alive at least into mid-September. Fifth-year coach Jim Grobe even has managed to keep the hope alive into October during most of his tenure.
