FOOTBALL
RECRUITING 2007-08

Coach: David Cutcliffe

2008 Duke Signees:.

Recent Recruiting Rankings (By Rivals.com): No. 68, No. 109 under Carl Franks in 2002-03; No. 70, No. 46, No. 56, No. 78 under Ted Roof from 2004-07.

Consensus 2008 Prep All-Americans: none. Interesting Story: Quarterback commitment Sean Renfree, rated the No. 9 prospect in the state of Arizona by Rivals.com, originally committed to Georgia Tech. Renfree de-committed from the Yellow Jackets after the postseason firing of Chan Gailey. After taking visits to Duke, Boise State and Arizona State, Renfree chose the Blue Devils, making him the highest-rated quarterback to commit to Duke in many years.

Top 2008 Recruiters: Wide receivers coach Scottie Montgomery, the lone holdover from the Roof regime, was crucial in helping the Blue Devils earn late pledges from Florida offensive lineman Brian Moore and in-state wide receiver Tony Foster. Montgomery also played a key role in retaining the commitments of players such as Florida defensive back Donovan Varner, Georgia defensive end Curtis Hazleton, in-state running back Jay Hollingsworth and Georgia defensive back Matt Daniels. Each had committed prior to Roof’s termination.

States Represented (11): Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia (prep school).

Academic Worries: none.

Key Misses: SC ATH Lee Butler (Georgia Tech), AL DB Matthew Gordon (Furman), GA TE Nigel Nicholas (Oklahoma State), AL LB Spencer Pybus (Auburn), GA ATH Matt Roark (Kentucky), SC DE Devin Taylor (South Carolina), PA WR Nihja White (Delaware).

Quotable Quote: "Recruiting is a lot about developing relationships, generally over a long period of time, and this staff did not have a great length of time to get that done."
— Duke coach David Cutcliffe
