It started in 1991 as a gimmick designed by ESPN to help boost ratings on an otherwise quiet sports night once baseball season ended. But it didn’t take long for the folks at the “World Wide Leader” to realize that they’d hit on something special.
Capitalizing on an anxious public that couldn’t wait until Saturday to get its weekly fix of college football and a handful of forward-thinking conference executives – including the ACC’s Tom Mickle – the network’s Thursday night football package surpassed everyone’s expectations to become a hit.
