David Glenn Chats With David Cutcliffe

David Glenn

David Glenn caught up recently with Duke football coach David Cutcliffe for an interview on Glenn’s new afternoon radio show.

Among the topics they discussed: Cutcliffe’s memories of other big rivalry games in the South; when Cutcliffe first understood the intensity of Duke vs. UNC; and how the Blue Devils match up with the Tar Heels’ defense.

Cutcliffe on his initial exposure to the Duke-UNC rivalry after arriving in Durham:

“At night my family wasn’t here, so I would either go to the grocery store, or go to Target or go somewhere that I had to run get something. And it was nothing but North Carolina people. I said ‘Good god, I’m behind enemy lines everywhere I go.’ Because it’s really all right on top of you. If you’re in Oxford, Mississipi, lord help somebody if they wore a Mississippi State t-shirt. But here, every time I bump into somebody in an aisle in the grocery store, it’s UNC.”

Cutcliffe on trying to find weaknesses in UNC’s defense:

“There are no matchup issues in our favor … We’ve got to try to keep them off-balance. We’ve got to do things differently than we’ve been doing them, with them not having an idea of when and why we’re doing them.”

Cutcliffe on what it’s been like to watch his players experience positive results:

“I find myself praying for them to do well, just because they deserve it so much.”
