Former Virginia coach Pete Gillen once cooked up an oft-repeated quote — “Duke is Duke. They’re on TV more than ‘Leave It To Beaver’ reruns” — that portrayed the Blue Devils as the model of consistency, the ultimate constant in a college basketball world filled with unpredictable variables.
Gillen was right when he said it, during the Devils’ amazing run of seven ACC titles in eight years (1999-2006). Would he still be right today? Maybe.
