Despite the current down times at Virginia, the Cavaliers were able to add to their 2014 recruiting class over the weekend, getting commitment No. 12, from Donovan Dowling.
Dowling is a 6-1, 205 pound receiver out of Richmond (Va.) Varina 247Sports.com ranks Dowling as a three-star receiver, as well as the No. 44 prospect in the state of Virginia. Rivals and Scout do not have Dowling rated.
He chose to go to the Cavaliers despite offers from Marshall, Delaware, Hampton, James Madison, Richmond and interest from Virginia Tech and Purdue.
Dowling will join five-star recruits Quin Blanding (S) and Andrew Brown (DT). He is currently the Cavaliers' only wide reciever in the 2014 class.
"I just really just like the coaching staff," Dowling told CavsCorner.com. "And the program over all. I'm playing top of the line football with a top degree, so why not?"
Dowling was also influenced by the other Varina alums on UVa's roster: Maurice Canady, Tyrell Chavis and Tim Harris.
"Just having that family was big," he said.
Dowling is aware of the current black cloud over Mike London and the Virginia program, but in his view that was still something he saw in a positive light.
"He's trying to win," Dowling told Scout.com. "Through all the adversity, he’s still standing strong and he’s resilient. It shows that he’s not going to give up during tough times and he’s going to lead us to ACC Championships"
While most sites list Dowling as a receiver, some peg him as an athlete after playing on both sides of the ball in high school. Dowling has also starred for Varina at linebacker and safety.
