New Wake Coach Bonded With Team Through Dodgeball

Wake Forest fullback Jordan Garside was trying to explain the difference between new Demon Deacons coach Dave Clawson and the man he replaced, Jim Grobe.

Clawson is more outgoing and hands-on than the reserved Grobe, Garside said.

“Here’s a good example,” he said. “One day during the spring we had a dodgeball tournament, with teams of 10 to 15 guys. And coach Clawson jumped in and played with us. His team made it all the way to the finals, too.”

“Coach Grobe would never do something like that,” Garside concluded.

Not only did Clawson’s team defeat  senior cornerback Kevin Johnson’s team, but Johnson was personally knocked out of the game by his new coach.

“I tried to catch his ball and put him out,” Johnson explained, “but it went off my hands.”
