Marquise Williams: ‘I Had To Grow Up Fast’

One year ago, Marquise Williams had never started a college football game, and going into last season, he really didn’t expect that to change with Bryn Renner at the helm.

The current UNC quarterback joined The David Glenn Show during the ACC Football Kickoff to discuss his new role as the Tar Heels’ top signal-caller.

“I was one of those guys to just sit back and let Bryn Renner take control. And when Bryn Renner used to yell at guys, I’d just laugh because I was immature,” Williams said when asked about becoming the Tar Heels’ starter at quarterback last season.

Williams stepped in after Renner suffered a season-ending shoulder injury during a 27-19 win over N.C. State. The new quarterback helped the Heels end the regular season 3-1, concluding the season with a Belk bowl win over Cincinnati.

“I was one of those young guys that didn’t really care what the football program had going on,” Williams stated when describing himself as a backup. But that ship has sailed. Williams knows he’s the guy now for North Carolina. If the team wants to contend for the Coastal Division with teams such as Duke and Miami, Williams must become more mature, and he sounds ready to assume that role as a big-time name for Fedora’s program.
