Snapshot: Hey Florida State, you blew it! Sorry to put it harshly, but the Seminoles had a perfect chance to jump the bubble if they could have beaten a reeling Syracuse team at home in the season finale. Instead, the Orange won by 16 and recaptured their mojo heading into the postseason. ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi has Florida State in his “next four out,” meaning the Seminoles are presently pretty far out of the picture.
What FSU Needs To Do: It’s obvious that just one win isn’t going to cut it, so the Seminoles need to make a pretty good run here in the ACC Tournament to get back into the conversation. First is Maryland, who is playing well but is definitely beatable. Then, the Seminoles can make a real statement by knocking off top-seeded Virginia. Even then, a win over North Carolina, Pitt or Wake Forest in the semifinals would almost be a necessity. Two wins gets Florida State back in the picture, and three wins puts it back on the bubble.
Other Teams Who Need To Lose: Two things need to happen to improve Florida State’s chances. One) A team completely out of the picture can’t win its conference tournament, meaning a predicted automatic qualifier has to consume an at-large bid. So far, this hasn’t happened. Two) Other teams on the bubble need to flop in their tournaments. These are the teams Seminole fans should have their eyes on this week: Tennessee, St. Joe’s, Dayton, Arkansas, Xavier, Nebraska, California, Minnesota, St. John’s and Providence.
