Clemson On Many Prominent Short Lists

September 30, 2002 Many of the best high school seniors in the ACC area (see left chart) had scholarship offers from Clemson and listed the Tigers among their top five entering October. Here are some others: Lovejoy (GA) High DB Derae Allen, rated one of the top 75 seniors in Georgia, said Clemson leads Georgia (no offer), Georgia Tech (no offer), Kentucky, Stanford and Wake Forest.... Tallahassee (FL) Lincoln RB Terry Arnold, rated one of the top 100 seniors in Florida, said LSU leads Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Indiana and N.C. State. He also has offers from Cincinnati, ECU and Middle Tennessee State. ... Chattanooga (TN) Notre Dame WR Adarius Bowman, rated one of the top 20 wideouts in the nation, said UNC and Tennessee lead Auburn, Clemson, FSU, Georgia, Notre Dame and USC. ... Hartselle (AL) High OL Brett Byford, rated one of the top 25 seniors in Alabama, said his top three consists of Clemson, USC and Nebraska. He also has offers from Georgia Tech, Indiana, Memphis, Southern Miss and Vanderbilt. ... McCalla (AL) McAdory WR Matt Caddell, rated one of the top 25 seniors in Alabama, said Alabama and Auburn lead Clemson, Florida (no offer), LSU, Mississippi and USC.

West Orange (NJ) Seton Hall RB Andre Callendar, rated one of the top 25 seniors in New Jersey, said his top six consists of Boston College, Clemson, Indiana, Michigan State, UNC and Penn State. ... New Orleans (LA) Walker WR/DB Milton Collins, a two-sport star rated among the top 25 seniors in Louisiana, said his top six consists of Clemson, Colorado, LSU, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi and Tennessee (no offer). A 6-1, 165-pounder, he&#146s a combo guard in basketball. ... New Orleans (LA) Walker LB Dominic Cooper, rated one of the top 25 seniors in Louisiana, said Colorado leads Clemson, LSU, Miami (no offer) and West Virginia. He also has an offer from Tulane. ... New Orleans (LA) Walker WR Craig Davis, rated one of the top 25 wideouts in the nation, said Miami (no offer) leads Clemson, Florida, LSU (Dec. 13) and Tennessee. ... Pickens (SC) High OL Marion Dukes, rated one of the top 25 seniors in South Carolina, said USC leads Clemson and Georgia. He also has offers from Army, Maryland and Vanderbilt.

Hoover (AL) High DB Labrose Hedge-man, rated one of the top 10 seniors in Alabama, said his top eight consists of Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia Tech, LSU, Mississippi, UNC and Notre Dame. He has more than 20 offers. ... Lehigh (FL) High OL Mario Henderson, rated one of the top 100 seniors in Florida, said his top five consists of Clemson (Jan. 10), Florida (no offer), Louisville, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin. ... Suwanee (GA) North Gwinnett LB David Hines, rated one of the top 50 seniors in Georgia, said his top five consists of Clemson, Florida, Georgia, USC (no offer) and Tennessee. Morganton (NC) High WR Chris Jefferson, rated one of the top 25 seniors in North Carolina, said Clemson leads Duke, Boston College, Maryland and Vanderbilt. He said he also has offers from ECU, Virginia and Wake Forest. ... Goose Creek (SC) Stratford RB Rodney Kinlaw, rated one of the top 10 seniors in South Carolina, said his top five consists of Clemson, NCSU, Penn State, USC and Virginia Tech. Duluth (GA) High QB Klay Koester, rated one of the top 75 seniors in Georgia, said his top five consists of Clemson (only offer), Florida, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and Tennessee. Ö Pensacola (FL) High DB Jhermaine McAroy, rated one of the top 100 seniors in Florida, said his top four consists of Clemson, FSU (no offer), LSU and Troy State. ... Piscataway (NJ) High DE Omar Savage, rated one of the top 25 seniors in New Jersey, said Clemson, Maryland and Rutgers lead Temple and West Virginia. He also has offers from Boston College, Indiana, Iowa, Purdue and Wisconsin. ... Tallahassee (FL) Rickards RB Kolby Smith, rated one of the top 100 seniors in Florida, said his top five consists of Auburn, Clemson, Florida (no offer), Georgia Tech and Miami (no offer). He also has offers from Alabama, Central Florida, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Tulane and Vanderbilt. ... Russellville (AL) High QB Jake Tompkins, rated one of the top 25 seniors in Alabama, said his top six consists of Auburn (no offer), Central Florida, Clemson, Louisville, Middle Tennessee State and Mississippi. ... Orlando (FL) Edgewater DB Mike Walker, rated one of the top 150 seniors in Florida, said his top five consists of Clemson, Florida (no offer), FSU (no offer), USC (no offer) and Tennessee (no offer). He also has offers from Central Florida and Connecticut. ... Greenville (SC) High WR Noah Whiteside, rated one of the top 25 seniors in South Carolina, said Pittsburgh and USC lead Clemson, Maryland, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

Prospects Select Area Programs

Greensboro (NC) Smith QB/WR Deon Adams, rated one of the top 50 seniors in North Carolina, committed to ECU over interest from Virginia and Wake Forest. A projected wideout for the Pirates, he played that position for Smith as a sophomore and junior before moving to quarterback this fall. In the season opener, he threw for 431 yards and rushed for 168 and two touchdowns. He caught 39 passes for 889 yards and six TDs last year. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds and the 100 meters in 10.74. After his public commitment, he said he still may consider other schools.

Port Orange (FL) Spruce Creek OL Garrick Clig, rated one of the top 150 seniors in Florida, opted for Maryland over interest from Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee. Voted the Most Valuable Lineman award at the Gators&#146 summer camp, he benches 405 pounds and squats 550. He runs the 40-yard dash in 5.2 seconds.

Danville (VA) Washington RB/DB Kenny Lewis, rated one of the top 25 seniors in Virginia, selected Virginia Tech over ECU, Maryland and Tennessee. In his first four games this fall, he rushed 45 times for 386 yards and four touchdowns. He had 410 yards and five TDs last season, while missing several games with an ankle injury. He has been timed at 4.4 in the 40-yard dash, 6.1 in the 60 meters and 21.7 in the 200 meters. Also a top outfielder in baseball, he said he hopes to play both sports for the Hokies, if he doesn&#146t sign a pro contract next spring. Lewis&#146 father, Kenny, played tailback for Tech from 1977-79, led the 1978 team in rushing (1,020 yards) and still holds the school&#146s single-game rushing mark (223 yards).

LaGrange (GA) High QB Blake Mitchell, rated one of the top 25 quarterbacks in the nation, picked South Carolina over Auburn, Florida, FSU, LSU and Tennessee. He also had offers from Arkansas, ECU, Kentucky, Maryland, MTSU, UNC, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. A pro-style thrower known for his good accuracy and decision-making, he threw for 2,086 yards and 23 TDs as a junior for the Class 3A state champions. He has a 3.0 GPA and an 18 ACT score.

Talented Targets Head Elsewhere

Virginia Beach (VA) Salem RB/DB Isaiah Gardner, rated one of the top 10 seniors in Virginia, picked Notre Dame over Clemson, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State and Virginia Tech. He also had offers from ECU, Georgia Tech, Indiana, UNC, NCSU, Northwestern, Oklahoma, USC, UCLA, Virginia and Wake Forest. He had 1,120 rushing yards and 23 TDs as a junior. He has a 3.0 GPA and a 900 SAT score. Ö Stone Mountain (GA) Stephenson RB Kregg Lumpkin, rated one of the top 10 running backs in the nation, opted for Georgia over Auburn, Florida, Miami and Texas. He also had offers from Arkansas, Michigan, Penn State and many others. He had 269 carries for 2,088 yards and 25 TDs as a junior. He has a 2.9 GPA and 760 SAT score. Ö Tampa (FL) Jesuit PK Garrett Rivas chose Michigan. His kicking tutor is Jay Feely, a former Michigan player now with the NFL&#146s Atlanta Falcons. Ö Pittsburgh (PA) Perry WR/DB Vaughn Rivers, rated one of the top 25 seniors in Pennsylvania, selected West Virginia over interest from Penn State, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech. Ö Boca Raton (FL) Pope John Paul II LB Dwight Stephenson, Jr., rated one of the top 100 seniors in Florida, picked Florida over Alabama, Pittsburgh and Tennessee. He also had offers from Boston College, Iowa State, UNC, Rutgers, South Florida and Troy State. Ö Atlanta (GA) North Springs TE Coleman Watson, rated one of the top 75 seniors in Georgia, chose Georgia over UAB, Notre Dame, USC and Wake Forest. Alabama, Clemson, Florida and UNC also showed interest.
