Lou Holtz likes to tell a story to illustrate the lack of security inherent in the coaching profession.
“They gave me a lifetime contract,” he once said. “That meant that if I was undefeated in November, ahead in the third quarter and we were moving the ball well, then they couldn’t fire me.”
